GEORGE A IFFRIG JR, age 98, of Wagontown, formerly of Berwyn, died peacefully on Sunday, October 18, 2020.
George was born in Philadelphia, PA on April 9, 1922. He was the son of Josephine and George Iffrig. The family was active in the running of the local store, where they made and sold home-made ice cream and candy.
George is predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Phyllis Eleanor (Dando) Iffrig. George and Phyllis were the parents of 13 children. Their family began in Annapolis, MD, where George was stationed in the United States Navy. They returned to Philadelphia, where they owned and operated a dry cleaning business. As the family grew, George studied to become a locksmith, the career he continued until he was 89. George and Phyllis’ most recent move was to Wagontown, where he became active with his church and its Teen Life program.
In addition to his wife, Phyllis, George was predeceased by his children: Josephine M Lewis (Barry), William A Iffrig (Mary) and Douglas C Iffrig (Nancy). George is survived by ten of his children: Phyllis (Jim) Bletz; George (Ruth) Iffrig; Robert Iffrig; Frank Iffrig; David Iffrig; Susan Darnell; Michael Iffrig, Paul Iffrig (Natalie); Dorothy Walton; and Dawn (Jimmy) Marchini. He was a proud “pop-pop” to his 19 grandchildren, and lovingly referred to as “super pop-pop” by his 23 great-grandchildren and 6.5 great-great grandchildren.
Services and interment will be privately held for immediate family on Saturday, October 24, 2020 at the MacLean Chamberlain Funeral Home and Philadelphia Memorial Park, respectively. Family viewing begins at 8:00 am at Maclean Chamberlain. Father Brennan of Our Lady of the Rosary RC Church will preside over the service beginning at 9:30 am. The private burial will follow at Philadelphia Memorial Park in Frazer.
Due to COVID19, a post-service gathering will be postponed until a later date.
